Calabash Squash

The Calabash squash or Green Bottle Gourd is a large waterproof gourd, named for its use as a water container for people throughout history.

Package Design

After putting the holes in our gourds, we needed a creative way to save the seeds from inside our gourds. So, using thick paper, we made seed packets that were functional as well as decorative and then placed the seeds inside to give as gifts, or to keep for ourselves and grow our own green bottle gourds.

Bottle Gourd Birdhouses

Using dried green bottle gourds, we used acrylic paint to decorate these beautiful shaped gourds and then placed a dowel in a small hole for a place for the birds to stand. Finally, we sprayed the houses with shellack and then tied strings to the stems to hang them from a tree. We saved the seeds too!
